Folks,

I wonder if this news below ever happened. Does everyone now has this subsidized laptop?

---

‘UNILAG staff, students to get a laptop each by March 2009’

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, has said that by March 2009, every member of staff and student of the institution will have a personal laptop each.

This initiative is being jointly sponsored by UNILAG in conjunction with Partnership for Technology Access and Microsoft Incorporation Ltd.

Odugbemi, who disclosed this in an interactive session with a representative of Microsoft, Mr. Martial Nogbou on Friday, said that the laptop will be secured at a highly subsidised rate for the members of the university community.

This initiative, Odugbemi said, was in line with his vision to put all members of the university community on the information superhighway before the expiration of his tenure.

“The plan is to ensure that each staff and student has a laptop each and this is in line with our vision to give staff and students access to be connected to the information superhighway,” he said.

Already, the university has created Internet connectivity points into public places, including the Biological Centre of the university, where students and workers, who have laptops visit to browse.

According to Odugbemi, “Computer literacy and internet/intranet services will be a priority. Efforts would be made to expand the current capacity and distribution Students will be given access to connection in the hostels and academic areas through secure means, and all offices that are yet to be connected to the internet will be connected.”

He added that efforts would be made to activate and ensure the use of campus wide intranet, adding that the university website would be updated on a daily basis and made more interactive.

To ensure accessibility, the vice-chancellor added that the university was already liaising with various agencies to ensure that all staff own a personal computer or a laptop, which would be purchased on instalment. “Computer laboratories will be maintained to ensure that our students have easier access and online lectures will be encouraged,” he said.

The partnership with Microsoft Incorporation, which is the brainchild of Odugbemi, is being handled by the institution’s CITS Management Board, headed by the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jerome Adepoju.
